BBC renews Vigil for season 2

The first season saw DCI Amy Silva (Suranne Jones) tasked with looking into the strange death of Officer Burke (Martin Compston) aboard a submarine.

Popular crime-drama Vigil has been renewed for a second season, The BBC has announced.

Star Suranne Jones is set to return as DCI Amy Silva who in the first run of the six-part series was assigned to investigate a suspicious death onboard the titular submarine.

That case was neatly wrapped up in the season finale so this second outing will see her investigating a brand-new mystery.

It will once again be set and filmed in Scotland with Tom Edge, who previously authored the screenplay for the Academy Award winning biopic Judy, returning to write the script.

No other cast members have been confirmed other than Jones, but it’s likely that Game of Thrones’s Rose Leslie will also return as Silva’s fellow officer and on/off girlfriend Kirsten.

Vigil premiered in August 2021 to mostly positive reviews and became the UK’s most-watched new drama launch since Jed Mercurio's acclaimed 2018 series Bodyguard.

The broadcaster has also today confirmed that three of its other recent hit dramas, Time, The Tourist and The Responder, have been renewed for a second season.

The entire first season of Vigil is available to stream now on BBC iPlayer.
