As ever, Sky Cinema is bringing us a bumper batch of cinematic treats this month, featuring everything from tragic tribute bands to grieving mothers and murderous theologians. There is some lighter stuff too, in the form of a bunch of animated adventures for the young ones!

Sky Cinema new releases: What’s on in August

Heretic - 1st August

Hugh Grant steals the show in this horror thriller, delivering another deliciously villainous turn - something he’s got surprisingly good at over recent years. And something he seems to be enjoying immensely.

Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) and Chloe East (The Fabelmans) star as a pair of Mormon missionaries who knock on the wrong door, and find themselves trapped in an elaborate dungeon and forced to prove their faith on pain of death.

Love Me - 1st August

It’s not often you get a super high concept sci-fi romance film, but this is surely one for the ages. In the far future, long after humanity has been wiped out by an unknown extinction event, a smart life buoy awakens and forms a relationship with a passing satellite.

Yep, you read that right. Stars Kristen Stewart (Twilight) and Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead).

Seven Snipers - 7th August

An elite sniper must bring together her former squadmates when a vengeful warlord threatens her family. Sort of like Seven Samurai, but at long range, I guess.

Stars Radha Mitchell (Pitch Black) and Tim Roth (Reservoir Dogs).

Song Sung Blue - 7th August

Music biopic about the group Lightning & Thunder - a duo who performed as a Neil Diamond tribute act. It might sound like a random subject for a movie, but this is based on an incredible, ultimately uplifting true story, charting the unlikely successes and challenges faced by the pair.

Stars Hugh Jackman (Logan) and Kate Hudson (Almost Famous).

The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie - 8th August

Animated adventure. When Earth comes under threat of an alien invasion, our only hope turns out to be… Porky Pig and Daffy Duck.

Tom and Jerry: The Forbidden Compass - 14th August

Another animated adventure. The two classic rivals are flung back in time and must work together to find their way home. That goes about as well as expected.

Hamnet - 14th August

Oscar-winning drama based on the popular novel by Maggie O’Farrell, following William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and his free-spirited wife Agnes (Jessie Buckley) as they deal with the death of a child.

This is beautifully shot by director Chloe Zhao (Nomadland), brilliantly acted and well-deserving of all the praise it’s received. But a word of warning - it will make you cry. Make sure to grab the tissues before you stick this on.

Signal One - 15th August

Sci-fi thriller starring Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan), Dennis Quaid (The Substance) and Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games).

A group of scientists on a remote island develop a machine capable of communicating with an alien intelligence, only to discover that contact comes with unforeseen downsides…

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 - 21st August

Josh Hutcherson (him again) returns in this horror sequel based on the beloved video game franchise. One year after tangling with the murderous animatronics at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, security guard Mike (Hutcherson) is back for more.

You’d think he’d know better at this point.

Charlie the Wonderdog - 21st August

Animated adventure about a regular dog who is abducted by aliens and returns with amazing superpowers. Naturally.

Twinless - 22nd August

Black comedy about two young men, grieving the loss of their twin brothers, who meet in a support group for twinless twins, and form an unlikely friendship. Stars Dylan O’Brian (Send Help) and Aisling Franciosi (Speak No Evil).
