Netflix releases first look at The Crown season 5

Imelda Staunton will play Queen Elizabeth II for the last two seasons of the acclaimed royal drama.

Netflix has released the first image from the upcoming fifth season of The Crown

The photo published by the show’s official Twitter account gives fans “an early glimpse” at Imelda Staunton in her new role as Queen Elizabeth II.

The Academy-Award nominee is set to take over from Olivia Colman for this fifth outing which will take place during the 1990s.

That decade was a turbulent one for the royal family and included such major events as the Windsor Castle fire, the Gulf War, the public breakdown of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s marriage and her subsequent fatal car accident in 1996.

Following the decision to recast all of the characters every two seasons to reflect the passing of time, this season will also star Jonathan Pryce as Prince Phillip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Dominic West as Prince Charles and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana.

Johnny Lee Miller will play former Prime Minister John Major, who succeeded Margret Thatcher following her resignation in 1990, with Fleabag’s Andrew Scott rumoured to have been cast as Tony Blair.

This outing will be The Crown’s penultimate one after creator Peter Morgan reversed his decision to limit the show to five seasons in mid-2020.

No official release date has been given but it’s expected to premiere sometime in 2022.

You can stream all four seasons of The Crown on Netflix now.
