When does the Premier League start? | Key dates for the 2023/24 Season

It’s felt like an eternity without Premier League football…

The fight for the Premier League title will soon begin again.

The start of the new Premier League season is just a month away now, which means we can finally begin to properly get excited for what’s to come in the new season!

After a thrilling 2022/23 campaign which saw many surprises and history being made, the 2023/24 season has a lot to live up to.

With that said, join us as we take a look into the key dates for the upcoming season, including the start and end dates, dates of the transfer windows, and more.

When does the Premier League start?

The first Premier League game will be held as usual on a Friday, the 11th of August to be precise.

It will start with title holders Manchester City taking on newly promoted Championship winners Burnley at their home of Turf Moor.

The season will run for nine months from 11th August 2023 to 19th May 2024.

Week 1 Matchups

After Burnley hosts Man City on the Friday, Saturday 12th August will be business as usual, with six games being played on the day.

Sunday 13th will see two more matchups, with one further game set to be played in the first Monday night game of the season.

The feature match of the weekend comes on Sunday, with Chelsea hosting Liverpool in a fixture that should be a good indication of whether these two heavyweights will be bouncing back from poor campaigns last year.

Here is the full list of fixtures for matchday 1:

Friday 11th August

Saturday 12th August

As always, the 3pm fixtures each Saturday for every matchday during the season will not be shown live in the UK.

Transfer Window Dates

The transfer windows are the most exciting time of the year for news. Keeping up with Fabrizio Romano and seeing what rumours are swirling about your team is a big part of the fun.

The summer transfer window is currently open and has been since 14th June, and will close at 11pm on Friday 1st September.

The winter window will then come as standard during the month of January, officially beginning Monday 1st January and ending at 11pm on Thursday 1st February.

Will There Be a Winter Break?

The 2022/23 campaign was a very busy one, with the Qatar World Cup slapped in the middle. This caused a very bunched-up schedule right before and especially after the tournament finished.

This year, though, it will be back to normal, with a winter break for all players in January, as well as a promise to clubs that no two rounds will take place within 48 hours of each other.

The winter break will take place between 13th-20th January.

Sky Sports Premier League

Keeping with the status quo, Sky Sports will have the rights to show the majority of games this season - 128 games, to be precise.

This includes all Friday and Monday night fixtures, as well as the 5:30pm kickoffs on Saturdays, and Super Sunday (two fixtures every Sunday, 2pm & 4:30pm).
