How to watch the 2024/25 Champions League knockout rounds on TV

8 more fall, another 7 to go…

The first part of the 2024/25 Champions League campaign, with its new revamped format, proved to be a rousing success,  and the preceding knockout round playoffs were also received well, so it’s fair to say this new format is sure to stay.

We’re now through the Round of 16 and down to the final eight teams that make up the quarter-finals, and it’s starting to get really spicy now.

Every game from here on out is sure to be a heated contest that you won’t want to miss, so find out how to watch the 2024/25 Champions League knockout stages on TV, plus the fixtures for said rounds and more.

How to watch the 2024/25 Champions League

Not much has changed in the way of how to watch the Champions League this season, with TNT Sports being the main broadcaster for all the games - although not the exclusive broadcaster like in previous years.

This year, Prime Video will be breaking new ground, hosting one Tuesday night fixture each round, with it always featuring an English team during the group stage and, where they have qualified, all the way through to the semi-finals.

Champions League on TNT Sports

TNT Sports remains the primary rights holder of Champions League football in the UK, so to watch the other games on a Tuesday, all Wednesday games and any other fixture past the group stage including the final, which will be exclusive to TNT Sports, you’ll need to ensure you have a valid subscription.

There are multiple ways in which you can get TNT Sports, with the first thought to go through BT. With BT, you can add TNT Sports to your existing TV package if you are already a customer, or you can find a BT deal that packages TV and broadband together, specifically one that includes TNT Sports.

How to get TNT Sports on Sky

You don’t only have to go through BT, as Sky offers the chance to add TNT Sports onto your Sky TV package, whether you're a new or existing customer.

To do this, simply choose the Sky package you want then add it on later when given the option. Similarly, if you are already a Sky TV customer, simply edit your package and choose to add it.

It’s not just online that you can do this though. We here at Digital TV have a friendly and dedicated Sky team that you can call. They’ll be able to get you exactly what you want and sort it all out for you.

Champions League on Prime Video

Prime Video made a major move by acquiring the rights to show a number of Champions League games, with them getting first choice for Tuesday games, in particular ones featuring English teams.

This continues all the way up until the semi-finals, so if you’re looking for your team on a Tuesday night and can’t find it on TNT Sports or Discovery+, be sure to check out Prime Video as it will be there.

New Champions League format: How it works

The new Champions League format introduced this year is named the "Swiss Model," and has proven to be a big success in its inaugural year.

Instead of the traditional group stage with eight groups of four teams, there are an additional four teams (previously 32 teams entered at the start of each campaign), with all 36 participating teams placed in one big league table. This new first round is named the League Phase.

Each team plays eight matches against different opponents (four home and four away), chosen based on a system that aims to balance the difficulty level of matches.

After the eight games, the top eight teams in the table automatically qualify for the Round of 16, while teams ranked 9th to 24th will enter a knockout playoff to decide the remaining eight spots.

Once the knockout playoffs are complete and the 16 teams going through to the Round of 16 is decided, the draw for the round will commence, with teams who qualified automatically being put against a team that won in the playoff.

In short, this new system adds more matches and increases the number of teams. The idea is to make the competition more exciting by giving teams more chances to qualify, and fans more high-quality games to watch.

The tournament still ends with knockout rounds, but the format change mainly affects the early stages by eliminating the old group system.

2024/25 Champions League: Round of 16 results

The Round of 16 saw some mega clashes, including the Madrid derby, a matchup between two of Pep Guardiola’s protégés, and an exciting affair between Paris and Liverpool.

Starting with that match, Liverpool were rather lucky to be coming into the second leg with the lead after the events of the first. Alisson’s heroics gave them a chance, but PSG managed to find the tie-equaliser and brought it all the way to penalties, where the Parisian’s were able to prevail (no thanks to a couple of poor penalties from the Reds - looking at you, Nunez).

The Madrid derby also was decided via a shootout. Real took a 2-1 lead into the second leg but Atletico eliminated that literally immediately, scoring in 30 seconds to level the tie. What proceeded was a cagey affair, both teams going for the win but falling short. In the end, a controversial penalty scored but ruled out from Julian Alvarez put the home side on the back foot and ultimately cost them.

Dortmund were the only other team that were made to work for their place in the quarter-finals. 1-1 after the first leg, they showed up in Lille and were initially stunned, falling down 2-1 on aggregate within five minutes. They fought back, though, and were unlucky not to be level or even ahead at the half. Finally, mid-way through the second half, they found the equaliser then not long after the winner to gain their place in the next round.

Other than those three, it was fairly smooth sailing for the others who advanced. Arsenal had a ridiculous 7-1 lead from the first leg so the second was really a formality for them.

Barcelona had a 1-0 lead after the first leg and finished off Benfica with a straight-forward 3-1 victory at home. It was largely the same story for Inter Milan, who comfortably beat Feyenoord in both legs.

Aston Villa are somewhat the surprise story of the tournament. Their fanciful draw in the last round saw them ease their way past Club Brugge, but they will face sterner opposition going forward now.

And finally, Bayern Munich gave a reminder to Bayer Leverkusen that they may have beaten them last year in the league, but the Bavarians are back to being the top dons in Germany once again.
